Redress Scheme Open for Applications

Thursday, 13 December 2018

"Michelle Roberts - Minister for Police - Media Release"

$16 million to recognise and acknowledge treatment of medically retired officers Applications close on April 8, 2019

Applications are now open for the McGowan Government's Redress Scheme for medically retired police officers.

The $16 million scheme announced by the Minister for Police in October, involves tailored, ex gratia-type payments to recognise the service and acknowledge the circumstances and treatment of some ill or injured officers.

Over the past several weeks, the assessment panel has been consulting with the Medically Retired Police Officers Association and WA Police Union.

A website has been set up to ensure the process of applying is as straightforward as possible.

The website, which can be accessed here, contains eligibility criteria and further information on the application process.

The scheme, which provides for a maximum payment of $150,000, is designed to offer some recognition of the indignity and treatment of some medically retired officers.

A panel chaired by former Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan APM will assess the applications which close on April 8, 2019.

Work has already begun on drafting new regulations to create a new standalone provision of the Police Act to ensure the medical retirement process is completely disassociated from Section 8.

Comments attributed to Police Minister Michelle Roberts:

"The McGowan Government came to office with a commitment to provide some recognition and acknowledge the past treatment of medically retired former officers.

"Over the past several months, the panel has been busy consulting with medically retired officers and the WA Police Union.

"We've aimed to make the process of applying as straightforward as possible and I encourage those who want to make an application, to jump on the website for further information."
